Winter is here: let's protect our eyes!
The aim of the campaign promoted byESA is to inform the public with a DVD to highlight the risks posed to people's eyes if they are incorrectly exposed to the sun, and contribute to spreading the message of the importance of proper sun protection.Serengeti , which fully shares this need for information, has decided to take part in the campaign and will be sending this DVD to its customers who are opticians, inviting them, in turn, to pass on the message to consumers. Since the start of the year, Serengeti opticians have also been receiving ESA's new DVD in Italy, to make an active contribution to the European prevention campaign, providing their customers with useful advice.
It has been proven that overexposure to the sun without protection can cause various eye pathologies, such as:
- 'snow' ophthalmia (lesions of the cornea)
- a number of tumors
- cataracts (clouding of the lens)
- age-related macular degeneration, better known as « AMD»
This last pathology, which is a very serious problem for public health, affects 20% of the population today in Italy aged over 65, and more than 12 million Europeans (Source WHO).Symptoms of age-related macular degeneration include: reduced vision, a dark spot in the middle of the field of vision and deformed straight lines, which can lead to blindness.
To fight the increase in eye diseases, the only recommendation ophthalmologists make is to wear sunglasses all year round, choosing polarizing, photochromic lenses with a blue light filter.
Serengeti sunglasses have all of these qualities and are the only ones that can reduce the risks of developing these pathologies, filtering out 95 % of blue light. They also reduce visual fatigue and help rest the eyes for post-refractive surgery (an operation that is extremely common today).
