'Journey in the eyewear world'

'Journey in the eyewear world'

The Safilo Group's Guglielmo Tabacchi Gallery was hosted by Ottica Nadia at its stores in Foligno and Bevagna and the ancient cloister at Bevagna for the 'Journey in the eyewear world' exhibition August 31 through September 26, 2007.

The exhibition attracted numerous visitors to the 7-century history of spectacles from their invention to the present day and was an important opportunity to see the items that most represent the style, customs and techniques of the vision accessory par excellence.

Exhibits included the handle and arc glasses used in 14th-century Venice, refined scissor glasses and pendant lorgnettes worn by nobles and academics in the 1700s, cases in precious materials like tortoiseshell, ivory, silver and gold.

Also attracting attention were the eccentric and original glasses that belonged to celebrities in the music and high-society worlds, such as Elton John, Madonna and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Thirty years after the death of music legend Elvis Presley, his glasses, like the silver-colored plastic model with perforated metal temples with the letters TCB and the bridge with his initials, were especially admired.

Located in Padua, the Guglielmo Tabacchi Gallery in the head office of the Safilo Group, the world leader of top of the range glasses with a vast and complete private collection of items from the optics and ophthalmology worlds, is the result of Safilo President Vittorio Tabacchi's passion for collecting.

In 2006 Safilo became an active member of Museimpresa, which took its Gallery into the new and growing universe of museums belonging to large and important Italian industries.
