Men's downhill skiing
The fight for the first places in the classification is hotting up. Just a few days remain before the end of the World Cup 2007 and our athletes are giving it their all, with no holds barred, as we saw in the last competitions at the weekend. Mario Matt and Benjamin Raich were the undisputed protagonists in Kranjska-Gora (SLO). Benjamin took the gold medal in the giant slalom and the silver in the slalom the following day. Benni is currently the leader in the general World Cup classification and second in the specialty classification where he had to make way for Mario Matt, the winner of the slalom competition and now the leader in the temporary slalom classification.
The next competitions before the Grand finale in Lenzerheide (SUI) will be held next weekend in Kvitfjell, Norway. On the agenda super combined, free downhill, and super G.
Women's downhill skiing
Nicole Hosp comes third in the general classification, after the excellent results in Tarvisio. After the gold in Friday's super combined, Nicole came second in the super G competition.
Also for our ladies few challenges remain before the finale. On 10 and 11 March, they will be busy in Zwiesel, Germany, competing in a slalom and giant slalom.
Cross-country skiing
The Nordic Skiing World Championships ended in Sapporo yesterday with the men's 50 Km. It was a difficult and tough competition that ended with the victory of the Norwegian team. Our Frode Estil took the silver medal, with his teammate in front of him by just a few hundredths.
Whereas, the last women's challenge was fought out on Saturday. Virpi Kuitunen won the third gold medal of the World Championships in the 30 Km classical style, with a perfect performance that puts her top of the general classification. Her companion Aino Kaisa Saarinen came fourth, followed by Petra Majdic. Only ninth place for Marit Bjoergen.
The next competitions will be held in Lahti (FIN) on 10 and 11 March.
