Off-the-shelf reading glasses: a leaning toward regulation?
A Coalition (Federottica, Assogruppi Ottica and Federgruppi Ottica) delegation met the head of the department at the Italian Ministry for Economic Development October 13 to discuss the problem of the indiscriminate sale of off-the-shelf reading glasses.
The official from the Ministry for Economic Development expressed the Ministry’s total cooperation in an attempt to find a solution but added that the Ministry for Health must also intervene to underscore that indiscriminate sales may put the health of citizens at risk.
This signifies that an explanatory Note would clarify the effective reasoning of the regulation in force and make it possible for off-the-shelf reading glasses to be sold in accordance with the Italian Ministerial Decree of July 23, 1998 (in optical centers, pharmacies and outlets authorized to sell medical devices).
