An eco-friendly collection from Stella McCartney
For Spring/Summer 2012, Stella McCartney has launched “eco-friendly” sunglasses, a new and sustainable collection that is the outcome of extensive research into the increased use of natural raw materials such as castor-oil seeds and citric acid.
The bio-plastic injected in the frames contains 54% castor-oil seeds, a renewable resource to limit the use of petroleum that takes millions of years to regenerate. Castor-oil plants are totally non-GMO and grow in the poor soil of semi-desert areas.
They need little water and pesticides and emit a small amount of CO2.
The collection also includes an ultra-new acetate, 54% of which is made from natural resources. The formula is a combination of cellulose, the most widespread renewable and biodegradable organic compound, and natural plasticizers that are not derived from diethyl phthalate (DEP) but from citric acid, a natural substance obtained by fermenting sugar.
The line has two acetate and three metal models that are available in a wide range of neutral colors like brown, green, gray, light pink and red, a reflection of the designer’s orientation toward environmental sustainability while remaining faithful to the palette of colors that is typical of Stella McCartney.
SM3009 – The acetate frame combines an oversize rounded shape with an ultra-feminine profile and slim, stepped temples. The discreet but immediately recognizable Stella logo is applied to the temples.
SM3010 – The generous metal frame has stepped acetate temples in bright, contrasting colors. The materials and square, shaded lenses make this eyewear style unique and eye-catching.
SM3011 – An aviator frame in a modern reinterpretation of the traditional style that no woman can relinquish. Its light, elegant shape, shaded lenses and the classic double bridge are emphasized by glamorous metal and acetate stepped temples for a modern look. Made from plastic materials derived from castor-oil seeds, the model complies fully with the brand’s eco-friendly philosophy.
SM4029 – A fun, urban proposal that totally complies with Stella McCartney’s eco-sustainability mission. The rounded, ultra-slim frame in plastic features enchanting nuances in a mix of opaque and transparent plastic made from natural resources.
SM4030 – This solid style has rounded edges for a comfortable fit. Complementary colors and a softly tapered shape enhance the upper part of the front piece and add a cool, modern touch to this classic design.
