It has come to our attention that a certain Maria Angela Colaprico of Putignano (Bari) was the debatable star of the popular TV program “Striscia la Notizia” February 2 and 3, 2009.
Introduced as an optometrist registered with Federottica and the Register of Optometrists, the program’s interviewers showed Colaprico carrying out procedures that have nothing to do with the known and standard techniques of optometric science and which seemed to be closer to those that are in no way connected to the work of an optometrist.
Federottica would like to point out that Colaprico is NOT registered with Federottica. Although she is on the Register of Optometrists, she was removed from it with immediate effect by the president of the Register, Prof. Rossella Fonte, when the case was brought to her attention.
Federottica would like to emphasize that the procedures used by Colaprico as shown on the TV program are a contradiction of the consolidated techniques that are recognized throughout the world for examining refraction problems, preparing adequate ways of compensating for ametropia, and for using vision education techniques.
We also point out that procedures such as those carried out by Colaprico create perplexity in the public at large and are the source of serious damage to the professional image of optometrists and the professional associations by which optometrists are recognized.
