Collection of used eyeglasses in Fasano
The World Health Organisation has estimated that the number of visually impaired people in the world is destined to double over the next 25 years. World Vision Day is a worldwide initiative sponsored by the Lions Clubs International to continue increasing public awareness of problems with vision.
The FASANO HOST Lions Club will participate in this world event with a permanent collection of used eyeglasses and sunglasses for those who cannot always afford them.
The Lions are asking the citizens of Fasano to donate their used eyeglasses that they no longer use, which will then be donated to the Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Programme. Those who intend to donate their eyeglasses can leave them at a specific collection point located in the Pharmacies and opticians’ stores in the territory of Fasano, Pezze di Greco, and Cisternino, as well as the secondary schools of Fasano and Cisternino.
The eyeglasses collected with then be sent to official Lions Recycling centres, where the glasses collected will be cleaned, catalogued and stored before being distributed free of charge to those who need them.
Marco Cedro, President of the Fasano Host Lions Club pointed out that over the first 9 months of 2009, the ‘Lions' Used Eyeglasses Centre’ has distributed nearly 100,000 pairs of used glasses in Tanzania, Liberia, Burundi, Benin, Morocco, the Philippines, El Salvador, Nigeria, Perù, and also to earthquake victims in Abruzzo.
