Again this year, Federottica presents "October is sight month"
One Italian in 5 has never had an eyesight check, over 60% have not had one for over three years, one person in 4 has an uncorrected vision defect. In Italy, 40% of school children have a sight defect but don’t wear glasses, 75% of the people who work at a computer have disorders such as eyestrain, blurred vision, headaches, and, in general, 25% also have muscle and back problems.
To combat this disturbing situation revealed by the experts, Federottica invites citizens to have an eyesight check. Again this year, the Associazione Federativa Nazionale Ottici Optometristi, proposes “Ottobre mese della Vista”, the national initiative that gives everyone the chance to have a free eye test. Throughout October, over 5,000 participating centers in Italy, recognizable by the poster displayed in the window, will offer everyone an eyesight check and give information about how to prevent and correct vision defects.
The Ottobre mese della Vista message is clear: continual development during formative years, the various tasks our eyes perform during adulthood and the ageing process that affects us all mean that sight undergoes continual functional changes. But because they occur gradually over time, they are not easily perceived and this leads to more generic complaints, such as headache or light sensitivity, that have a negative effect on the quality of life.
Federottica’s advice is to have regular eyesight checks at a specialist optics center, even if optical correction is not yet used. A physical ailment can at times be caused by a vision defect. So it is important to correct it through vision education, which also teaches correct posture and the importance of proper lighting, and by using the most suitable correction.
