A contemporary fetish look for Jean Paul Gaultier
Jean Paul Gaultier’s 2010 sun collection takes inspiration from the themes of the maison’s last runway show, Fall/Winter 2009. The first of all the themes which inspired the collection is “Fetish,” an icon of the Eighties, here offered again in some women’s models from the eyewear collection, designed in typical Gaultier fashion, but revisited and more structured, with linear shapes.
Frames with a retro shape are made current thanks to the metal rings applied on the acetate temples, for a look that is definitely goth and fetish. The Valise themed frames have a vintage appeal but are still modern, taken from Gaultier’s accessories, in particular the luggage. The frames are characterized by an antiqued detail which is reminiscent of the metal closure on a suitcase. Round and ample shapes in the women’s version and more linear and squared men’s shapes, in either metal or acetate.
The return of the Eighties is the undisputed main character of the collection, which sees the use of metal in the entirety of the glasses frames, creating soft and wavy movements, which are reminiscent of the French “whales,” Jean Paul Gaultier’s historic icon during that decade.
In addition to basic black, fashionable colours such as cream, Havana, and powder are offered, which provide the perfect Gaultier style, while gunmetal, opaque black and palladium are the choices for the metal models. In addition, they offer an enticing game of alternating transparent acetate in the front piece with full colour temples. The shape is elegant but decisive.
For the men’s line, squared off shapes in acetate for glasses personalized on the inside of the temples, with the stripe that is typical of the maison, revisiting the striped pattern of the t-shirt, alternated with the logo.
Strong colours play together, such as shiny black or basic, or multilayer black and white, making the glasses gritty and contemporary. Electric blue is also introduced as the brand’s new trend colour. The spring, a best seller in the most recent sunglasses/vision ware collections, becomes a distinctive element of the brand, personalizing the glasses and is revisited with a slender temple for an acetate pilot model.
The last motif for the men’s line, extremely characteristic, is a metal detail showing two snakes woven together on the temple, characterised by a central anchor with the Gaultier logo, applied on to a half mask with unisex appeal.
