Alcon presents Dailies Total 1®
Contact lenses with patented water gradient reach Europe Alcon has announced that the European Patent Office (EPO) recently granted a patent on Alcon's DAILIES TOTAL1® water gradient contact lens technology. The EPO patent protects the combination of technologies and materials that differentiates DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses from any other lenses on the market. At the heart of this revolutionary innovation is the water gradient manufacturing platform that has enabled Alcon researchers to optimize core and surface properties independently, thus achieving exceptional lens comfort that will last all day long.1 "The patent application for DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses involved a rigorous evaluation process that lasted two years and ended with this important milestone granted by EPO", said Erich Bauman, OD and R&D Program Leader for DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses. "The granting of this patent – he adds – reflects Alcon's commitment to creating innovative eye products that improve the quality of life by helping people to see better. The patent rewards the untiring efforts of the Research and Development division within Alcon to drive innovation in vision care." The water content In DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses goes from 33% in the core to over 80%* on the surface, and close to 100% in the outermost part, almost the same percentage as in the cornea2. The high performance of DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses was designed specifically to give greater comfort; indeed they have the highest level of lubrication and oxygen transmission than any other daily contact lenses**, to give maximum comfort until the end of the day. The surface of the water gradient in DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses is composed of a particularly soft hydrophilic polymer reticule. The particularly low module and highly lubricating surface minimize interaction with the eye's delicate tissues. The dk/t of 156 DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses allows more oxygen to pass through the lens, an important factor for eye health3. The patented water gradient for DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses combines the innovation derived from Silicone Idrogel and the properties of the LightStream Lens Technology manufacturing process with the latest developments for lens surfaces, thereby creating a new material called delefilcon A. This unique material is not used in any other contact lenses. Until now, soft contact lenses used only one material composition with the same water content all over the lens. DAILIES TOTAL1®, the patented water gradient contact lens, has recognized differences in material composition and water content, so no compromise is necessary between the properties of the core and those of the lens surface. This means that the lenses maintain 100% of their lubricating power on the surface, even after wearing them for an entire day1.
