Ppg: upturn in European sales of Trivex
The considerable experience in the development and production of optical monomers and lens treatments that has made Ppg Industries one of the leading companies for the production of materials for ophthalmic lenses and polarizing sun filters, excited great interest among journalists at the presentation held October 22 in Paris.
The vast range of materials produced by Ppg includes the CR-39 monomer. It will be celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of its creation in 2006 and it is still the most used product in the specific field throughout the world. In 2001, Ppg Industries also created Trivex, an innovative material that offers three characteristics: superior optical quality, shock resistance and lightness, in addition to being compatible with many colors and various scratch-resistant and anti-reflection treatments.
These properties have made Trivex highly successful on the European market where it sold 654 thousand lenses in 2004, a figure that has doubled in the first nine months of 2005 and now stands at a total of around 1,300,000 lenses (data at end September 2005).
Based in Pittsburgh (USA), Ppg Industries holds approximately 3% of the world market for lenses and has a significant positioning in the industrial processes of many companies in terms of lens production, packaging and treatment.
