Laser complicates glaucoma diagnosis

Laser complicates glaucoma diagnosis

According to a study carried out by the team headed by professor Marco Nardi, director of Pisa university's oculist clinic, the incidence of glaucoma in myopic patients who have undergone excimer laser treatment is higher than that in normal patients.

After corneal thickness has been flattened (the scope of laser treatment), interocular pressure is always lower than real levels. This is a condition that does not indicate a suspected glaucoma which is linked to an increase in these levels.

'But the most surprising aspect of the research', Nardi pointed out, 'is that of the 200 patients operated on (the selection focused on those with average-serious myopia) and whom we duly advised, only 70 came forward for the proposed monitoring. In practice, the charts prepared in accordance with our clinical experience show that by not having a check up there is a greater risk of the onset of glaucoma and retinal detachment. Conditions which could controlled more effectively with early diagnosis'.
