'Intelligent' artificial cornea
A team of scientists at the Ottawa University Eye Institute in Canada has developed an artificial cornea by using an 'intelligent' material which allows the patient's own cells to regenerate and integrate with the artificial tissue implanted in the eye.
The new material is compatible with the human organism and it is sufficiently 'sensitive' to focus on light and allow the patient to regain sight. It is similar to a contact lens, but it is made of a mixture of collagens and a synthetic polymer with the same structure as a human organism.
