Usa: Cpi for Eyeglass declines as Cpi for All Items rises
While overall consumer price index (CPI) advanced in August, the CPI for eyeglasses and eye care declined, the Bureau of Labor reported. Based on seasonally unadjusted numbers, the CPI for all items rose by 0,3% while the CPI for eyeglasses and eye care declined by a considerable 0,8%, following a 0,5% increase in the preceding month. The August level of 155,1 reflected the biggest dip for eyeglass and eye care prices so far for this year after the 0,6% decrease in June.
However, it was still slightly higher by 0,1% than August 2001 level of 155.
The rise in the overall consumer prices, on the other hand, was driven by large increases in energy products, clothing and tobacco. Energy prices last month jumped by 0,6%, following a 0,4% increase in July. Clothing costs saw a strong 1,1% increase as more expensive fall and winter merchandise started to flood the market. Tobacco and other smoking products posted a 2,4% increase.
CPI is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.
