Us$72 Million To Fight River Blindness In Africa

International donors seek to eradicate the disease from W.Africa and open up 25 million hectares (62 million acres) of arable land to cultivation following elimination of the black fly.

According to the World Health Organization, 18 million people are infected with the disease with 99 percent of cases found in Africa.

River blindness is also found in South America and the Arabian peninsula. WHO estimates 270,000 people are blind because of the disease.
