Market Performance in Q2-2002: Lasik Prices Up

The introduction of new technology on Laser Eye surgery appears to be paying off as proven by the market performance in Q2-2002. Market Scope reported that despite low demand on the procedures, LASIK prices rose slightly during the second quarter of the current year.

An estimated 314,750 procedures were performed during the quarter, down 14.8 percent from the same quarter last year and 11.4 percent versus the prior quarter. Average price, however, was up 0.4 percent compared to last year and 2.8 percent over the preceding month to $1,601 per eye.

As consumer demand for LASIK has fallen in the last year, eye surgeons have looked into increasing prices as a way to offset declines in total revenue. The introduction of new devices, such as IntraLase, has led surgeons to charge higher prices. Many surgeons have found that small increases in price have not changed their competitive position in the local market.
