Ex-Press Mini Glaucoma Shunt For Reducing Intraocular Pressure
Ciba Vision has signed a licensing and distribution agreement with Optonol for the exclusive rights to market a miniature glaucoma shunt in the United States and Canada. The Ex-press mini glaucoma shunt is an innovative, minimally invasive approach for the surgical treatment of glaucoma where medical and conventional surgical treatments have failed.
Ex-Press is a 400-micron diameter tube made from implantablestainless steel that is less than 3 mm long, and comes loaded on a specially designed disposable inserter. The device reduces intraocular pressure by diverting excess aqueous humor from the anterior chamber to a subconjunctival bleb.
The Ex-Press shunt has advantages over conventional filtering surgery in that it is minimally invasive.
Its "miniature" size requires a very small incision in the conjunctiva. In addition, the procedure can typically be completed in less than five minutes.
