A Conference to Debate Details of National Diabetes Framework

A national conference which aims to help eye care professionals play a greater role in the DoH's latest blueprint for diabetes care has been scheduled for November. It is hoped that the day-long meeting will provide a forum for delegates to hear about schemes already in place, as well as give an opportunity for questions to be put to speakers about particular areas of concern.

The Government's Diabetes National Service Framework was announced at the end of last year to help fight what is the leading cause of blindness among Britons of working age. At the Department of Health December launch government health officials were eager to stress the involvement of optometrists in the detection of the disease, with regular surveillance for diabetic retinopathy in adults.

A variety of speakers have been lined up for the conference, which will take place in central London on November 4. They include optometrist Richard Broughton, immediate past president of the College of Optometrists. Mr Broughton will speak on establishing a diabetic retinopathy screening service in a primary care setting.
