Milan = Design
The major appointment for the world of design is underway: Milano Design Week.From April 12 through 17 the Salone del Mobile. Milano and the International Furnishings Accessories Exhibition will host over 1300 exhibitors in more than 150,000 square meters divided by the style types Classico and Design. At the same time, the city will be alive with FuoriSalone events that contribute to establishing Milan as the World Capital of Design.
Returning this year are the biennials of the EuroCucina and International Bathroom Exhibition and the 19th SaloneSatellite, the theme of which will be “Nuovi materiali, nuovo design/New Materials, New Design”. Chosen by a prestigious Selection Committee, the participants will be joined by various international schools of design.
New additions to the fair include the new xLux sector created in recognition of a type of product that is already established, mainly on the American, East and Far East markets, and was launched to meet the growing demand for a precise positioning for this type of product.
However, the Salone del Mobile.Milano is also synonymous with culture and, in line with its attitude to incorporate business, it will present “Stanze. Altre filosofie dell’abitare” (Rooms. Other living space philosophies), curated by Beppe Finessi at the Palazzo dell’Arte, in Milan, from April 2 through September 12, 2016. The exhibition is part of the XXI Triennale International Exhibition, which is returning after twenty years and intends to underscore the special task of interior architecture as well as provide a vision of our living spaces projected toward the future.
In two events it also pays homage to what came before design: the exhibition-event “Before Design: Classic”, a reflection on the classical core elements of contemporary living spaces, and the short film made by multi-award-winning director Matteo Garrone (to be shown in pavilion 15 F15/H18), which explores classic Made in Italy taste and its actuality in a visual and sensory journey.
Lastly, The Mall Porta Nuova – Brera Design District hosts “space&interiors”, an event directly associated with the Salone del Mobile.Milano and organized by MADE expo, the international biennial of architecture and building industry. Surfaces, floors, doors and interior finishes are presented in an evocative setting curated by Migliore+Servetto Architects.
This year the Exhibition will continue with the Salone del Mobile.Milano Award that will be assigned by a prestigious jury for specific categories, including: best designer, best young designer, best product in the kitchen sector, best product in the furniture sector, best product in the bathroom sector, best setting, classic furniture. The winners will be presented with their awards on May 4.
So what about the eyewear that got us accustomed to organizing events like See with Mido at Fuorisalone? This year we can’t meet eyewear manufacturers because, with the exception of some brands exhibiting independently, the majority will be busy at the fair in New York City.
