MOTHERSBAUGH X BAUM CAPSULE COLLECTION
An ultra-new line of eyewear by Mark Mothersbaugh and Shane Baum The Ron Robinson retail store at Fred Segal on Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, was the location of a launch party Wednesday, November 19, for the ultra-new line of eyewear by Mark Mothersbaugh and Shane Baum. The 64-year-old singer, composer, visual artist and designer is considered to be an unparalleled genius of pop; in 1972 his artistic vein led to the creation of the famous band DEVO, which critics still believe symbolizes the evolution of contemporary rock. With the aim of creating distinctive products that reflect his timeless spirit and incomparable imagination, Mark decided that he should make his debut in the world of fashion with a line of eyewear. "Aware of the influence that this accessory had on Mark's imagination, my aim was to create something that would mirror him as an artist, singer and, primarily, as a person", said Shane Baum, founder and CEO of Baumvision, an eyewear distribution, manufacture and design company in California. Art and experience molded the first capsule collection MOTHERSBAUGH X BAUM FW 14-15. It consists of three models (sun and optical) in beryllium, a satin-finish gray-toned metal that Shane Baum chose because it is light, versatile and strong (six times stronger than steel) and also won't oxidize or corrode. The three models in the collection are characterized by amusing and decidedly particular names that have close links with their creator's life: AKRONITE - a thick, rectangular frame – is derived from Akron, Ohio, where Mark was born; MUTATO - a schoolboyish frame – is a portmanteau word coined from "mutant" and "potato" and is also the name of his production company; FRANCESCA - a unisex oversize frame – is the name of the Mothersbaugh family's dog. Also known as Frank, it is an androgynous mixed breed that is one in a million - just like this eyewear model.
