Sunglasses for preventing cataract
A study by the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (Qimr) shows that nuclear cataract, the most common form, is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The risk is higher amongst people who are exposed to high levels of solar radiation at a very early age.
For developing countries in particular, the discovery is an important step forward in the prevention of cataract, which at one time was considered to be a natural part of the aging process. 'Our research indicates that this condition may not be natural and can be prevented', said professor David Purdie, head of the project. 'Our results also suggest that most ocular damage caused by ultraviolet rays occurs before 30 years of age', he added.
Cataract is the cause of blindness in half of world's 40-45 million blind people. According to Purdie, the answer to the problem is very simple: wear sunglasses with ultraviolet ray protection.
