Armani retrospective on show in Rome

The Museo Nazionale Romano, Diocletian's Baths May 6 will see the arrival in Rome of the important retrospective on Giorgio Armani. After the inauguration at New York's Guggenheim Museum in 2000, this is the fifth stage of a tour that has already visited Bilbao, Berlin and London, and will go on to Tokyo and Los Angeles.

Rome will host the 25 years of Armani fashion at the Museo Nazionale Romano, Diocletian's Baths, where the exhibition will remain until August 1. The event is in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and the Archeological Agency of Rome.

Over 500 garments, original sketches and audiovisuals present a themed perspective of Armani's career and his development: the modern androgynous look with the creation of the innovative deconstructed jacket, the influence of the cultures of the Far East and North Africa, and the 'non color' palettes, which have contributed to the reputation of the creator of understated elegance, and links with the cinema starting with American Gigolo.

For the Rome exhibition, theater director Robert Wilson has created a specific installation which focuses on 'sculptural' language to fill the impressive architecture of the thermal complex, the largest in the Ancient Roman world. Co-curator of the exhibition is Germano Celant, senior curator of contemporary art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, together with Harold Koda, guest curator of the exhibition and curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
