Protect Your Eyes During the Holidays: Tips for a Child-Safe Christmas
The holidays are a time of joy and togetherness, but they also come with often-overlooked risks. Here are some expert tips and advice from Commissione Difesa Vista to protect children and ensure a safe and happy celebration.
The festive season, while joyful, can pose hidden dangers for children. Common incidents include swallowing small objects, eye injuries from glitter, fairy lights, or fireworks, and risks from items like sparklers, which should never be handled by children under 5. Even champagne corks during toasts can be hazardous. Vigilance and caution are essential for a safe Christmas for all.
“Eye injuries should never be underestimated,” warns Enrica Ferrazzi, a communications professional, mother, and founder of the project Occhi dei Bimbi (Children’s Eyes), dedicated to children’s eye health. Together with Dr. Maria Antonietta Stocchino, she authored the guide Children’s Eyes: A Guide to the Visual Health of Our Kids to help parents learn more about vision care, from preventive checkups to managing common conditions and minor household accidents.
Dr. Stocchino also emphasizes the dangers of fireworks: “From corneal abrasions caused by objects on the eye’s surface to chemical and thermal burns that can damage the eyeball, cause retinal detachment, or, in severe cases, lead to vision loss. Don’t assume prescription glasses will protect you—they can even increase risks in case of impact. Fireworks should always be left to professionals. If you attend an organized show, maintain a safe distance!”
Then there’s champagne: “Be cautious, as corks can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h and cause severe eye injuries that may even require removal of the eyeball,” add Ferrazzi and Stocchino, who regularly address parents’ concerns about these and other risks in their online community.
“Commissione Difesa Vista has always promoted campaigns to raise awareness about children’s eye health,” says Vittorio Tabacchi of Commissione Difesa Vista ETS. “Celebrating the holidays safely is crucial, especially for children. As Christmas approaches, it’s important to remember that decorations and fireworks can pose risks to visual health. Simple precautions can prevent serious eye injuries, which may sometimes have irreversible consequences. Keeping children supervised and educating families about potential dangers are essential steps for a safe and joyful holiday season.”
