Written by MIDO | 04/29/2022

The time is here: today, after two years on hold, the first in-person edition of MIDO opens its doors to exhibitors and visitors from around the world.

The numbers are clear: more than 660 exhibitors from 45 countries including the USA, Germany, France, Spain, Korea, Japan and visitors from 50 countries. Five pavilions and eight exhibit areas (Fashion District, Lenses, Design Lab, More!, FAiR East, Lab Academy, Start Up and Tech) will host the entire eyewear supply chain. More than 20 seminars and workshops focused on continuing education and professional updating in the OttiClub space in pavilion 15. A B2B digital platform available to industry professionals at the show and, above all, to those who, due to health-related restrictions and the current political situation, are still unable to travel.

Kick-off to the show is the opening event tomorrow, Saturday April 30th in the Auditorium, a tribute to art in all its forms of expression, offering shared moments of beauty, music, dance, entertainment, reflection and current events, along with high-profile guests and well-known Italian personalities.

MIDO 2022 is also the venue in which Italy’s eyewear industry traditionally looks back at its performance with the presentation of ANFAO data for 2021 and the forecast for 2022. “We’re recovering and there’s an air of optimism among businesses,” remarked Giovanni Vitaloni, President of MIDO and ANFAO. “Overall, in 2021, exports of Italian eyewear exceeded 2019 levels. Last year, exports were up 39%, with overall worth of 4 billion euros and production grew by 35%. The forecast for the first half of 2022 is still positive and we foresee a 10% rise in exports, compared to the same period last year. As indicated, the forecast reveals a vein of optimism running throughout the sector and we hope it is a good omen for MIDO 2022, which embodies the real, definitive relaunch of our industry,” concluded Vitaloni.

Responsible innovation, sustainable beauty, modern vintage and visionary minimalism: these are the catchwords for the SS 2023 eyewear trends expressed as three macro-trends – Design-Wise, Soul Space and Full Spectrum – on display at MIDO. The WGSN MIDO study findings will be revealed at noon on May 1st in the Otticlub space.
