Sustainability by now represents a core value for our society and in the world of eyewear, an always higher number of companies are embracing it. At this point “eco” glasses are no longer the exception but the result of a business journey that includes a change in attitude regarding environmental issues.
We have browsed around among the latest collections and have chosen some selections with a sustainable spirit.
Eco by Modo is a pioneer when it comes to this issue and its latest collection in organic acetate closes the circle of the sustainability of its offerings, joining the other three families of materials: metal that is 95% recycled, bio-based and ocean plastic.
Another brand that has decided to put its faith in an environmentally friendly and ethical collection is TBD Eyewear, which has been betting on sustainable materials since 2020. The brand completes the question of its green soul, with its most iconic unisex styles of eyeglasses, in an eco-sustainable guise looking to the future: after the Earth Bio and Eco Green collections, Blue Ocean introduces new colour variations: Black and Transparent, Havana and Dark Tortoise.
Gant’s r-PET project, launched in 2020, is an example of the brand’s commitment to eco-sustainability, expressed each season through new eco-friendly styles. Each r-PET frame is made with 85% regenerated plastic, that is, approximately five recycled bottles. This season the brand has raised the bar, presenting a 100% sustainable model: GA7209.
23° Eyewear has at the basis of its belief system the production of glasses with a zero impact approach to circular design. The newly created folding model by Rectangular One presents a square line made in Neocleus, the combination of a bio-material of natural origin, a highly technological processing and a sustainable production procedure that allows for endless recycling. The frame comes with a case in recycled material.
Timberland’s environmentally-innovative philosophy is reflected particularly in the models classified as “Earthkeepers” thanks to their responsible design using at least 35% of bio-based plastic material. Starting from the latest selections for fall, the inside of the temple includes a more detailed description of its bio-based composition for each pair of eyeglasses - 35%, 50%, 65% or 80%.
We end our view with a startup that debuted at the MIDO Digital Edition: Quoise. Its line of sunglasses,
100% Made in Italy, uses
Econyl, a material created by Aquafil, an organisation active in the industry of synthetic fibres. The ethical element is combined with the environmental element: for each pair of eyeglasses purchased, the company donates 5 euro to the Marevivo not-for-profit organisation, which has been fighting to safeguard the sea and the environment.
