“Eyeglasses in art”
The “Occhiali nell’Arte” (eyeglasses in art) exhibition at the Eyeglasses Museum in Pieve di Cadore (Belluno) will be open until January. The exhibition is composed of about twenty works from the Safilo Private Collection and from other private collections that are perfectly in tune with the theme of the museum. The jewel in the crown is the 14th century Treviso fresco by Tommaso da Modena depicting Cardinal Hugh of Saint-Cher wearing a pair of glasses. This work is believed to be one of the first in which eyeglasses appear. The exhibit also hosts paintings and prints from the 16th to the 20th century - most of which have never been exhibited before – in which the presence of eyeglasses makes it possible to sketch a brief history of the shapes, uses and significance that the article has assumed over time.
