Honorary degree in Material Engineering for Leonardo Del Vecchio

Production efficiency, extreme attention to the smallest details of design and production, research: these are the ingredients skillfully mixed by Leonardo Del Vecchio and thanks to which the Luxottica Group has become world leader in the design, production and sale of vision frames and sunglasses. Today, the company is present in 120 countries on 5 continents with a portfolio of 26 brands and around 55,000 employees, worldwide.

Leonardo Del Vecchio immediately understood that it was essential to invest in experimentation, research and innovation in order to continue to be successful in a sector linked to progress in technology and materials. In honor of his extraordinary professional career, the Milan Polytechnic yesterday awarded him with an honorary degree in Material Engineering.

The introductory address by the university president Giulio Ballio was followed by the praises of professor Pietro Luigi Cavallotti. Leonardo Del Vecchio then gave a speech on 'The industrialization of production and the sale of a product: glasses'.

The reasons for awarding the honorary degree were put forward by Giuseppe Biardi, the dean of the Faculty of Industrial Process Engineering at the Polytechnic: 'The Faculty of Industrial Process Engineering at the Milan Polytechnic awards this honorary degree in Material Engineering to Leonardo Del Vecchio for the intelligence and skill applied to choosing different materials and to successfully setting up the industrial production and assembly technologies for these materials to create an object that is indispensable for modern man'.
