
European Youth Games 2006
In Rome for the first day of the Special Olympics European Youth Games 2006 a hundred ophthalmologists and optometrists, volunteers from Solcioe (Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes) welcomed and tested over 90 youngsters with intellectual disabilities for free.
The first optometric eye program studied to improve quality for people with learning difficulties thus reaches its sixth edition, offering the athletes personalized eye tests, corrective glasses, sports protection and sun frames.
Enthusiastic about the professionalism and important participation of the volunteers from Solcioe, Timothy Shriver, the international Special Olympics president, awarded a prize to the Opening Eyes clinic director, Giulio Velati, J. Franc Moore III, the international Lions Clubs Internationals president, Cyrille de Montvalon, Chief Executive Officer Essilor Italia, and Neil Allavena, the head of sponsorships and donations Safilo, for the supply of ophthalmic lenses and frames for all of the international Special Olympics events.
