The European Union has been developing a strategy for sustainable development for years and intends to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
Within the strategy, ample space is given to the circular economy. Specifically, the Circular Economy Action Plan was approved in 2020: a set of reforms with the aim of transforming the way we produce and consume from a linear to a circular approach. Also on the topic, in 2023 the European Council reached agreement on a proposal to revise the Circular Economy Monitoring Framework adopted in 2018. The revision adds new indicators on material footprint and resource productivity (to monitor material efficiency), consumption footprint. The new framework supports the EU's circular economy and climate neutrality ambitions as part of the European Green Deal.
